Bi-phase 101: How a Water and Oil Combo Can Get You From Dehydrated to Amazing

Do opposites attract? When they’re bi-phase skincare products — hell, yes! A water and oil combination may be great on salads, but you’ll be amazed at how even better they are in your skincare. Let's get shaking!

When I was younger, I was obsessed with trying to mix oil and vinegar together. I loved seeing the vinegar float around the oil and slowly sink to the bottom. Even now, when I make dinner, I still get a kick out of seeing the little blobs of vinegar floating around in the oil (forever young).

What does this have to do with skincare? One word: BI-PHASE. Did you know that bi-phase products are all the rage in the skincare world? Well, now you do!

What are bi-phase products?

Have you ever been walking in Sephora or your local department store and have seen some gorgeous beauty product that is seemingly two different liquids but in one bottle? Those are bi-phase products. Bi-phase products allow a brand to combine two different types of products into one, offering the consumer a 2-for-1 skincare experience. When you shake them together, the products combine to offer you a magical skincare salad dressing. Amazing!

So do bi-phase products do anything or are they just fun to look at?

Well, what if I told you bi-phase products are fun to look at AND are effective? YASSS QUEEN! Bi-phase products are cool because you get more bang for your buck. You can get an oil AND a hydrating serum in one (remember, oils don’t hydrate the skin because they’re an occlusive).

Cleansers and makeup removers like the Eclado Flawless Lip and Eye Remover or the Etude House Curl Fix Mascara Remover are a really great bi-phase product. You get the benefit of tug-free makeup removal with the oil, but you also get the hydration your skin needs from the water. Wins all around!

Other great bi-phase products include the Keep Cool Fixence Mist, with water to hydrate and oil to seal that hydration in and set your makeup. (It’s clinically proven to hydrate your skin for hours, unlike solely water-based face mists.) And if you’re really looking to maximize the full benefits of bi-phase products, the Wonjin Effect Vita Moist Ampoule is worth a look. The moisturizing wonder features seed oils and loads of vitamins for a serum and oil product in one.

OK, so I’m sold. What are your favorite bi-phase products?

I wrote a post about misting a few months ago, and the comments were super super lit. One of our readers (HI!) talked about the SanDaWha Camellia Oil Whitening Mist, and let me let you in on a little secret.

YOU NEED THIS MIST IN YOUR LIFE IMMEDIATELY. RUN. DO NOT WALK. PASS GO.

OK, whew. But for real. This mist is a game changer. First of all, the number one ingredient is camellia flower extract, not water, so that’s already a vv big mood. It also has camellia seed oil and camellia seed extract, so basically it’s a giant bomb of camellia flower, which is obviously not a bad thing AT ALL. And to top it off, it also has jasmine and rose flower oil. AND IT’S A MIST. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART. It’s so magical. I wish I had 12 bottles of it at a time because I just go through it so fast.

I love to spray a few spritzes of this after each step of my nighttime skincare routine, and I spray it on extra heavy after I’ve done a peel or a clay mask.

Another product that really had me shook (HAHAHA GET IT, SHOOK) is the Earth’s Recipe Revital Oil Shaker serum. It’s an awesome bi-phase serum that has the hydrating properties of a humectant serum PLUS moisture locking oil. Notable ingredients are sweet almond oil, niacinamide, fermented yeast, and a slew of botanical extracts to give you a super mega-watt glow.

To use, shake it up, put a few drops into the palms of your hands, and gently press into the skin. I like to use it during the serum phase in my nighttime routine, right before my sheet mask. If you’re someone who isn’t all about using 10 steps during your routine, you can use this serum and combine two steps in one!

Do you use any bi-phase products in your routine? Let me know in the comments!
