Yes, the Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Mask Is Pricey — But It's Totally Worth It

What do you do when you want to treat yourself? Go to the spa? Make reservations at that hot new restaurant? Help yourself to a second helping of fries? How about indulging in a super luxe sheet mask — just because it’s Sunday? How contributing editor Sheryll spends her “treat yo’ self Sundays” with the Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Mask — and more importantly, why.

It’s Sunday. I’ve just done an at-home peel, and I’m all settled in about to spend a few hours watching TV or reading before the start of another week. I’ve written out my to-do list for the week in my planner and I’ve taken a look at my training schedule. There’s a glass of wine, some snacks (and a protein shake), and my favorite part of my week — the Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Mask.

I, like most people, am not rich (or anywhere remotely close to it *cries in student loans*). But I like to feel like I am on occasion. If you like luxury and indulging yourself, then you will love the Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Mask.

I LOVE Sulwhasoo, but I’ve only tried the Overnight Vitalizing Mask, the Oil Cleanser, the Clarifying Mask, and the Snowise EX Cleanser because they are the cheapest things they have. Like, I literally picked those things to try because they are the most affordable (but really, nearly $40 for an oil cleanser still makes my heart weep, even if it’s the best one I’ve ever tried). When I lived in Korea, the ladies at the Sulwhasoo counter would always hook me up with tons of deluxe sized samples, and I’d hang on to them like precious jewels. Out of all of the things I got to sample, I always really loved the First Care Activating Serum. It legit transformed my whole face. I remember using it and just glowing and wanting to bathe my face in it daily. So imagine my surprise when I found out that there was a sheet mask made with the serum?! I died. And then I looked up the price — and died again.

Sixty. Dollars. For. Five. Sheet. Masks.

SOB.

I just could never justify it, until Beautytap had the masks on sale. I have never bought something so fast in my life. I’d been waiting years to try them!

What makes these masks so special (and expensive!?). Well, the First Care Activating Serum has been a #1 bestseller in Korea for 20 years running. It’s made from Sulwhasoo’s patented JAUM Balancing Complex, which is five concentrated Korean herbal ingredients and a whole bunch of other hanbang goodness. This powerful blend of herbal ingredients hydrates and balances the skin and infuses it with magical unicorn tears to make you glow like you’re from outer space. So imagine this extraordinary serum, infused into a sheet mask, that you leave on for 20 to 30 minutes. CAN YOU IMAGINE?! It’s out of control.

So I finally got the package and immediately tried one the first night. It was a transformative experience. Like the skies opened up and angels sang and lights beamed and … yeah. It was everything. I legit gasped as I put the mask on. It’s made out of a very unique, lightweight micro net cotton that adheres to your face like butter. And if you love the Sulwhasoo scent (who doesn’t love the Sulwhasoo scent), then you’ll be happy to know this mask smells like hanbang goodness through and through. And when you take off the mask and pat in the essence … girl. It sinks into the skin like magic and literally leaves you glowing until the next morning. I don’t know what kind of magical powers Sulwhasoo puts in a lot of their products, but listen, I am all for it.

I never understood the hype behind the SK-II masks when the Sulwhasoo  First Care Activating Mask exists. I’ve tried the SK-II masks out of sheer curiosity, and honestly … they are not good. If Hollywood and all the celebrities who rave about the SK-II masks knew about these Sulwhasoo masks, I get the feeling everyone and their mom would be buying them up in hoards. The results are that good.

These masks are perfect before any special occasion when you want to glow or just to treat yourself on a lazy Sunday evening (like me!).

Have you ever splurged on a sheet mask? What's your favorite one? Let me know in the comments!
