It’s that time of year again, when it seems your calendar is packed with one celebratory gathering after another. So whether it’s a family feast, a company party, or dancing till dawn, you’ll want to prep your skin ahead of time for all the indulging and imbibing, not to mention that special occasion makeup you’ll be packing on. Here, our tips on how to get your skin celebration ready so you can look your best from Thanksgiving to NYE.

It’s the most wonderful time of the yeaaaaaaar!

That’s right — it’s holiday season. And that means tons of parties, get-togethers, and celebrations with friends and family. There’s Friendsgiving, Thanksgiving, all the Christmas parties, NYE, and everything in between. This means there’s a lot of fancy events that our skin needs to be in tip-top shape for, and I’m here to give you the 411 on how I keep my skin celebration ready for all the holiday festivities.

Whenever I’m prepping my skin for a big event, I like to take a number of things into consideration:

1. What kind of event will it be: a normal get-together with friends, a company party, or full-on black tie?

2. What kind of makeup do I want to do: a natural, glowy look more suitable for daytime, or a snatched glam extravaganza for nighttime?

3. Where will I be: in a club? At a friend’s house?

4. What will I be doing: Am I going to be a hot, dancing, sweaty mess? Taking lots of photos? Chillin’ with my co-workers?

So yeah, there are a lot of things to consider before I go to a get-together. What kind of makeup (if any) I do is a major starting point on what kind of skincare prep I do, so let’s start with that.

skin celebration ready

Whether I’m going dewy and natural or wearing a full face (matte full coverage foundation, contour, bronzer, highlight, baking, the works), I like to make sure that my skin is EXTRA hydrated so the foundation isn’t just sitting on top of dry skin, which can make you look dull. So starting at least two days before the event, I take my nighttime routine up a notch. Here are a few of my tried-and-true tips for getting my skin celebration ready.

1. Double sheet mask

A few days before the event, I start double sheet masking. Yes, I do TWO sheet masks. One is a very hydrating mask like the Dr.Jart+ Vital Hydra Solution Mask, and then I top it off with something with brightening properties, like the Leaders Insolution Brightening Mask, a tried-and-true staple. I wanna glow, OK!

2. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

I also load up on tons of hydrating essences, serums, and moisturizers. I’m not gonna lie: A lot of the time I am lazy, and I might use four steps during my nighttime routine, but I take it up a notch when I want my skin to look bomb. I love using the Rootree Essence, Toner, and Emulsion, topped with some glow-giving rosehip seed oil.

3. Mist like mad

I start misting like my life depends on it. I am not a frequent mister, but I don’t want my skin to get dry (combo skin woes) so I mist liberally in between each step in my routine when I know I need to look my best. The most amazing mist in the entire world is the SanDaWha Whitening Camellia Oil Mist. It is WONDERFUL. I also use this mist after my makeup is finished if I want to look extra dewy and more natural.

4. Let it absorb

The day of the party or event or whatever I’m doing, I make sure that I do all my skincare stuff at least 30 minutes before I need to wear makeup so all of the products are nice and absorbed and what have you. All of these steps ensure your makeup will apply really well and won’t look cakey.

So many people blame the foundation itself (which CAN be a problem), but a lot of the time it’s because your skin was dry or wasn’t properly moisturized and hydrated before you applied your makeup. There’s a reason why you see supermodels wearing sheet masks before they get their makeup done for the runway!

5. Sheet mask as a primer

Which brings me to my next point. Sometimes, I use a sheet right before I do my makeup. When I do it this way, I like to apply all of my skincare first, including my oil, and then put a sheet mask on top to kinda seal everything in. I remove the mask and tap, tap, tap the essence into my skin. This tip has changed my life!

6. Set with a mist

After my makeup is finished, I generously mist my face again. This helps the makeup look a bit more natural and gives your skin a nice, dewy glow. Ultra-matte finishes look nice on Instagram, but people don’t have matte skin in real life.

7. Prevent the meltdown

If I’m going to be in a bar, house party, or somewhere where I’ll be hot and sweaty, I use a foundation primer to ensure a bit of longevity. I also spray with the Urban Decay All-Nighter Spray, which locks your makeup on your face, literally.

8. Finally, the sure thing

Buy the Sulwhasoo Overnight Vitalizing Mask. If you don’t have time to make a full routine out of it, using this mask the night before any event you go to will ensure your skin is amazing. Trust me.
