Take Your Masking Sesh Old School With These Amazing Wash-Off Masks

Remember when good ol’ fashioned wash-off masks were the epitome of self-care before sheet masks hit the scene? Rediscover the joys of slathering on a face mask for all their skin-loving benefits.

Today, I’m going to take it back.

Back to the ol’ days when sheet masks were a novelty and wash-off and peel-off masks were the go-to’s. Do you remember the first time you used a wash-off mask? I do. I felt like such a sophisticated, fancy, put-together adult, like someone who casually sipped white wine in the bathtub while eating a bowl of cherries and reading the latest Nora Roberts book. Peak adulting, OK?!

Since sheet masks have taken over, I feel like wash-off masks have gotten the short end of the stick. Or maybe it’s just me. I prefer the convenience of sheet masks, but after raiding my stash a few weeks ago, I’ve started to incorporate more wash-off masks into my routine. Somehow, they feel slightly more indulgent, perfect for laid back summer evenings (or mornings or afternoons, whatever floats your boat!). Want to know my favorites? Read on.

SanDaWha Camellia Flower Antioxidant Cream Mask

One of my favorite wash-off masks in the entire world is the SanDaWha Camellia Flower Antioxidant Cream Mask. The name is misleading, as it’s definitely not a cream, but a lightweight yet ultra-hydrating gel texture. Camellia flowers are known for their amazing antioxidant benefits, and as luck would have it, it’s the first ingredient! Even better? There are actual, factual pieces of the flower in the mask, so basically whenever I use this I feel like a magical garden fairy whipping up a magical potion for glowy skin.

Other notable ingredients include my bae niacinamide for brightening, centella and green tea extracts for soothing your skin and reducing redness, and rose and jasmine oils. A MOOD.

Innisfree Jeju Volcanic Pore Clay Mask

I’m taking it waaaaaaay back with this one. This was one of the first ever K-beauty purchases I ever made, way back when I used to live in Korea. It was (AND STILL!) is one of the best selling products at Innisfree and is a true summertime staple for those of us with oily skin. It’s made with Jeju volcanic clay, which works to remove dirt and impurities from the skin, reduce blemishes and acne, as well as balance out oil production.

I like to use this mask after a long day outside to really get all the “gunk” out of my pores, and then follow up with a soothing, hydrating serum and sheet mask.

23 Years Old Aqua Bab Modeling Mask

I speak in hyperbole a LOT, but when I tell you that this mask is one of the best things I’ve ever put on my face, I’m not kidding. Modeling masks are next level, OK. Basically, they allow you to have that spa mask experience in the comfort of your own home, which, if you’re a homebody like me, is one of the greatest things ever.

I always like to set the scene when I use this mask because you can’t really move around a lot, as it’s a bit drippy. Cover your pillows in a towel (in case of drips), light a candle, play some soothing music (I’m a fan of piano jazz or Yo-Yo Ma myself), and rest for 20 minutes. Not only will your brain thank you for not needlessly scrolling through Instagram, your skin will look radiant, soft, supple, and glowy, thanks to ingredients like licorice root extract, centella, and Morus alba bark extract.

Leaders Labotica Transforming Liquid Rose Gold Mask

Are you a true millennial if you don’t have a rose gold mask? Probably not. Thankfully, this mask isn’t just a marketing ploy for masking selfies — the rosy hue is due to a major concentration of Rosa centifolia flower water, a unique ingredient designed to brighten, hydrate, and reduce redness.

To use, simply paint it on with a rubber masking spatula or brush, let it dry for about 10 minutes, and then slowly peel it off to reveal skin that is summer glow ready!

What are your go-to wash-off masks? Let me know in the comments!
