Never Have I Ever Star Richa Moorjani Reveals Her Beauty + Wellness Secrets
In an exclusive interview with Beautytap, Richa Moorjani shares how she unplugs, her favorite high protein snacks and the one beauty product she’s still searching for.
If you’re craving more of Mindy Kaling’s hit Netflix coming-of-age series Never Have I Ever, we’re about to make your day. The chart-topping show is returning for a third season and so is fan favorite, Richa Moorjani who plays “Kamala” - the high achieving, dazzling cousin of “Devi."
We spoke with the supremely down-to-earth California native and mental health advocate about the importance of a digital detox, her go-to skincare products and the healing morning ritual that’s been passed down to her from her great grandmother.
Beautytap: You’re starring in a Netflix series that’s not only entertaining, but also resonating deeply with so many fans. What are you doing to stay mindful and take care of yourself during this extraordinary time?
Richa Moorjani: Thank you, I’m grateful to be part of Never Have I Ever and it’s such an honor to hear from so many people who have been touched by the show. I’ll say that unplugging is essential for me. It’s important to get out of town and completely delete social media off my phone while away or even over the weekend. Social media can consume so much of our day, and that can inhibit our creativity. It’s not only a detox, doing this also gives me time to be more present with family and friends.
Beautytap: How do you practice mindfulness while you’re on set and at home?
RM: I do a lot of deep breathing after hair and makeup, especially if I’m feeling a little anxious or nervous before a scene. Sometimes I do a little meditation too. At home I keep my phone on airplane mode for first 1-2 hours after getting up and practice a morning grounding ritual which consists of meditation, yogic breathing and stretches. I’ll do a more condensed version of this at night before bed.
Beautytap: As someone who is vegan, you’re not only highly conscientious of the foods you eat, but the skincare products you use as well. What are some of your favorites?
RM: I’m always looking for vegan, clean, cruelty-free products. There’s no reason for beauty brands not to be vegan and cruelty-free today. I’ve also discovered many beautiful Ayurvedic brands like Soma Ayurvedic’s Vitamin C Serum - it’s great for my dry skin and it has such a clean, natural scent too. And Ranavat’s Brightening Saffron Serum has truly changed my skin.
Beautytap: Is there a product you use throughout the day?
RM: I love using a facial mist after I wash my face and I’ll also use it during the day. True Botanicals is a completely natural brand and I love their Nutrient Mist.
Beautytap: What are your makeup essentials?
RM: The three things I use are lipstick, blush and mascara, and if I had to choose just one of them it would be lipstick. Live Tinted’s Hue Stick is a South-Asian owned small business and one of my favorites. The shades compliment all skin tones and work as a blush, lipstick and eyeshadow – this one product is all you need.
Beautytap: You have shared that your mom has luminous skin, and it clearly runs in the family. Any family beauty rituals or traditions you can share?
RM: I have a glass of warm water with fresh lemon each morning - this is a tradition that’s been passed down to me for generations now from my great grandmother.
It’s very detoxifying.
Beautytap: You get a lot of compliments on your hair. Which products are you using?
RM: My hair is very thick and can get dry. I like Olaplex’s Leave-In Conditioner, Fable and Mane’s Shampoo and Conditioner (they are another South Asian owned brand inspired by Indian beauty and rituals) and Vegamour’s shampoo, conditioner, and gummies.
Beautytap: It can be challenging to avoid decadent snacks, especially during long shoot days when so many goodies are around. What are your top healthy picks?
RM: I have quite a sweet tooth, but I’m not a big snacker so that helps to avoid the temptations. I’ll have a protein bar, a shake, or nuts in between meals. Go Macro and Garden Of Life are really good, high protein bars that are lower in sugar and keep you going for a while.
Beautytap: Any signature fragrances?
RM: I actually don’t have one now. I’m still looking for the right cruelty-free fragrance.
Beautytap: When you get home from a long day of shooting what do you look forward to?
RM: I’m a candle burning, pajama wearing person at home. I usually dim the lights, burn incense, play meditation sounds, and light Voluspa or Diptyque candles.
