Prepare for a transformative bath experience.

Folks, let me just say that I am tired. For so many reasons, but on a physical level, I have been prioritizing exercise every day as a primary tool to manage my mental health. And while my brains and my body are thanking me, I am in a constant state of soreness.

Soakness Peroxide Bath

As a trainer, I would generally recommend Epsom Salt baths and Advil, in addition to upping your protein intake and getting enough water, but I have another effective tool in my arsenal these days.

Soakness Hydrogen Peroxide Bath is a powder you add to your bathwater like you would Epsom salt, but this formula goes beyond simple Magnesium Sulfate. The goal is to promote overall well-being and relaxation, but also to detoxify, oxygenate and balance your pH levels.

The Soakness team is made up of Caltech scientists and USC doctors who worked together to create this optimal formulation. This doctor-formulated blend consists of Magnesium Sulfate, Carbonate Peroxyhydrate, Sodium Bicarbonate, Bentonite, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Colloidal Oatmeal and Silica.

Simply opening the package releases the soothing scent of Eucalyptus, so if you’re pining for the spa, you’re already primed for a memorable bath experience. The suggested use is a single packet per bath, so of course, I used two, because that’s how I roll. And I have to say, that spa scent lingered for most of the day and I was not even a little bit sad about it.

So, let’s get into it.

Why Magnesium Sulfate?

Magnesium Sulfate–also known as Epsom Salt because of where it was discovered–is a chemical compound made up of magnesium, sulfur, and oxygen. When it’s dissolved in water, it releases magnesium and sulfates, which are essential elements for optimal body function.

Sulfates are required for proper cell growth. Don’t get me started on the miracle that is Magnesium - an essential mineral involved in hundreds of biomechanical reactions, from muscles to nerves to bones, to supporting immune health, adjusting blood glucose levels, and aiding in the production of energy and protein.

Magnesium is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. It helps to maintain normal nerve and muscle function, supports a healthy immune system, keeps the heartbeat steady, and helps bones remain strong. It also helps adjust blood glucose levels and aids in the production of energy and protein. So a good soak should help with that muscle soreness, especially if you’re an athlete. I’ve been using Epsom salt for decades, and I feel a million times better after soaking.

What is Sodium Carbonate Peroxyhydrate (SCP)?

SCP is a granular powder that dissolves in water to become sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide. It’s used in lakes to kill algae and prevent further growth - so, why would we want this in our bath water?

Used as an antiseptic since the 1920s, hydrogen peroxide has disinfectant, antiviral and antibacterial properties. It disinfects wounds, treats acne and hyperpigmentation, and that bubbling foamy feeling you get when you hear it sizzle? That sloughs off dead skin cells.

Sodium carbonate–or soda ash–is a moisturizer that also aids in the absorption of natural oils. Quite the multi-tasker.

Sodium Bicarbonate?

This is just your friendly baking soda. You can use this stuff for so many things. If you’re like me, maybe your grandmother encouraged you to dust some of this stuff on your toothbrush.

It’s included in your soak for its anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, neutralizing (pH balancing) properties, as well as for its ability to cut through grease and absorb funky odors.

Bentonite? Bet On It!

Bentonite is clay made from volcanic ash. An ancient healer, it’s used in many well-known skincare formulas. Bentonite is a detoxifying agent, it soothes skin rashes, heals wounds, and softens hair. If we take all of its uses into account, it makes sense that this soak would include it.

The caveat is that it can be irritating to the skin, so thank goodness for those skilled Soakness doctors and scientists who carefully crafted a winning formulation here. And again, I will point out that I used two packets when I was only directed to use one, and it was only pure, skin-soothing relaxation for me.

Eucalyptus Oil, Colloidal Oatmeal and Silica For The Win.

Eucalyptus gives us that alluring aroma while also clearing our sinuses and potentially treating arthritis and skin sores, if you’ve ever suffered from the itch of eczema, colloidal oatmeal is already in your arsenal, and the silica reportedly improves the function of the overall formula.

If you are someone who appreciates a good soak and is yearning for a blissful bath experience along with “detoxification, oxygenation, and pH-balancing of the skin,” I definitely recommend adding Soakness™ to your regimen.
