Hey Beautiful! I’m Victor, a cosmetology student at Aveda Arts & Science Institute in Arlington, Virgina. I’m a healer and hair sculptor-in-training on a mission to provide safety, play, authenticity, community, and exploration in my chair and beyond. My art is inspired by the unapologetic swag and aesthetic of the (Black) 1990s, architectural angles of Vidal Sassoon, theory-based customization and principles of healthy hair care. There were, and still are, consequences to expanding the bounds of Black masculinity, and conforming was a form of protection and self-preservation. So, for the first 32 years of my life, I did largely what was expected of me. I’ve traveled the world, done work that matters, met amazing people, and made a lot of money; and, I’m grateful for those experiences. But, something was always missing. I didn’t feel authentically aligned with the creator’s highest calling for my life, and I had no idea what that calling even was. Wellness put me on a path to myself. A new hairstyle helped build my confidence in my authenticity. My nails are a colorful reminder that it’s my birthright to take up space in the world. A workout taught me discipline. Therapy allowed me to feel and to love — first myself and then others. Fast forward to January 2023. After 10 years in Corporate America, I was unexpectedly laid off from my job. This ushered in a new season with one singular goal: to create spaces, opportunities, and experiences for Black queer men to feel beautiful, confident, and worthy — simply because we deserve it. I believe there is something unique, magical, and divine in each of us; that is why we were chosen to spend time together on Earth. It’s an honor for me to help someone tell their story through self-expression. I’m excited to use my hands, my heart, and my creativity to co-create with my guests representations of their stories. All are welcome in my chair under one condition: you show up exactly as you are.
